THE ARMY

     (b) Support to the R.A.F.    Support for the R.A.F. has taken the form of  asphalt surfacing of all hard standings on the airfield and the laying of  certain concrete hard standings. Two Bellman hangers have been erected and a number of small buildings repaired.

     (c) Work on the Main Camp and roads.   Less has been done in the Main Camp than most people would have liked but eating is now more comfortable with the appearance of new dining halls,  serveries and preparation rooms.

By far the  greatest task though the least spectacular is the maintenance of the complete existing road networks which consists of either lagoon mud roads or dirt roads. The most tangible improvement is the surfacing of the main road from the Camp to the airfield.

Quarrytroops.   The Quarrytroop produce crushed stone without which none of the construction work could take place. They have to produce two to three thousand tons of stone every week to satisfy the needs of the concreters and the men who lay the asphalt.

No 2 Special Engineer Regiment Workshops, R.E.M.E   To back all this work up large quantities of plant and equipment are required with their attendant maintenance problems and in this respect No.2 Special Engineer Regiment Workshops, R.E.M.E. has ably supported the Engineers. by maintaining and repairing a wide variety of plant and vehicles.

R.A.O.C.  Services   The Army team is completed by the R.A.O.C. Services who as well as laundering our clothes, run an Ordnance Field Park from which is drawn spares for vehicles and plant and tools and equipment from all the Army jobs on the island.
