The Corps of Royal Engineers

     The present Corps of' Royal Engineers originates from the Kings Engineers who were permanently  employed by the King from early times chiefly for fortification work. There was, for example, one "ingeniator" Waldinus mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. The Corps' history since then has been a long, varied and honourable one. The word. "Sapper" by the way, comes from the name given to a siege trench; "a trench dug by men working at the bottom and constantly extending towards the enemy". The Sappers have always been to the fore in technical developments as may be seen from the following examples:-

     Signalling   During the Crimean War, the first field telegraph was used and from this were derived the air line cable and wireless companies. In 1911, these were known as Army Signals Services R.E. After 1918, these units became the Royal Corps of Signals.
