The Corps of Royal Engineers
Mottoes
"Honi soit qui maly pense"
"Dieu et Mon Droit "
"Ubique"
"Quo fas et Gloria Ducunt"
The present Corps of' Royal Engineers originates from the Kings Engineers who were
permanently employed by the King from early times chiefly for fortification work. There was, for
example, one "ingeniator" Waldinus mentioned in the Domesday
Book of 1086. The Corps' history since then has been a long, varied and honourable one. The word.
"Sapper" by the way, comes from the name given to a siege
trench; "a trench dug by men working at the bottom and constantly
extending towards the enemy". The Sappers have always been to the fore in technical developments as
may be seen from the following examples:-
Signalling During the Crimean War, the first field
telegraph was used and from this were derived the air line cable and wireless
companies. In 1911, these were known as Army Signals Services R.E. After 1918, these
units
became the Royal Corps of Signals.
