The Mid-Pacific News is perhaps unique amongst newspapers in that its circulation is assured and it costs its readers nothing. The paper originated during Operation Grapple when it was produced by an Army team which had been trained for the job. Publication ceased at the end of June, 1957 and the first edition of Volume 2 appeared on 25th October, 1957. In the meantime not only was the island without a daily newspaper but also it lacked the equipment necessary for the printing. Since the resumption of daily publication, all the printing of the daily issues and of this special issue has been done on an old manually operated duplicator which is always on the point of giving way or giving up. The news content is taken down from the Overseas Service of B.B.C. each morning from 08.45 till 09.15 and is then transferred onto stencils ready for printing. 0nly occasionally is there time for the items to be written out and scrutinised before they are passed to the typist. A debt of gratitude is due to the B.B.C. who have even slowed down the rate of delivery of the football results on Saturday mornings at the request of the editors. In the near future a modern electric duplicator and sundry other pieces of up-to-date equipment should make the production of the newspaper much easier. |
