19. Navigational Bombing Aids The main navigational aid used to position the
Valiant accurately on the race track from I.P. to the point on the bomb line
where the bomb aimer could take over visually was the Decca Flight Log.
However, considerable unserviceability of the Decca equipment was experienced
during the training phase, and navigators were forced to concentrate on the use of the
G.P.I. and Green Satin equipment. 20. The G.P.I. was used on the Along/Across track function, with a track of 164°T set on the track drum. The counters being zeroed at release point on the bombing line thus facilitating timing to that point. 21. The Decca Flight Log was fully serviceable on the dropping Valiant on the day of the live drop, and this aid was used by the navigator. 22. At Appendix 'D' the bomb line and race track is shown in relation to the S.E. point of Christmas Island. Communication Report 23. The report dealing with communications aspect for the route from Wittering to Christmas Island is contained at Appendix 'C'. Courier Task 24. No difficulties were experienced with the courier task, the Valiant carrying the special A.W.R.E. load arriving at Christmas Island on time as planned prior to departure. 25. All staging posts en route gave excellent support, and no difficulty experienced in refuelling the Valiant or giving crews the support required.. |
