Air Electronics Report

 

1.     Outward Transit Phase

(a)     Communications    Four Valiant aircraft prepared to Grapple standard departed Wittering during the period 19th to 24th March, 1958, and arrived at Christmas Island between 23rd and 28th March, 1958. Normal routes communications facilities were used and in addition a H.F. propagation trial was carried out with Headquarters Bomber Command/Farnborough on Headquarters Bomber Command control channels. This latter was to test the efficiency of the latest modification to the H.F. notch aerial. The resu1ts of this trial are the subject of a separate report which has been forwarded to Headquarters Bomber Command .Route communications were satisfactory in the case of all aircraft and, in general, serviceability was of a high order. Frequencies used were:- .

          (i) Headquarters Bomber Command            - 9022,  11247 and 18003.5 Kc/s

          (ii) Civil                                                           - As per RAFAC

(b)     Route Radio Navigational Aids.   All aids were used satisfactorily with the exception of the M.F. beacon of ocean station Bravo which was out of operation during the transit of the first three aircraft. No unserviceabilities were reported.
