The exact force of the bomb is a military secret, I but I understand that it was in the megaton range equal to millions of tons of TNT. The test was a success and more are likely to follow.
Weather conditions were about perfect for the test. Light north-westerly winds carried the fall-out away from any populated areas.
Four Valiant bombers of No. 49 Squadron, after weeks of trial runs, took off. Captain and pilot of THE plane was 36-year-old Wing Commander Kenneth Gilbert Hubbard.
They climbed high. Then Wing Commander Hubbard decided "This is it," and began his approach run. Flight Lieut. Washbrook- cousin of England cricketer Cyril Washbrook-released the bomb.
The moment he did so Wing Commander Hubbard banked steeply and flew away at top speed to avoid the blast.
He had 30 seconds to make his "escape." Immediately he was clear he flashed out the historic two-word message: BOMB GONE.
