FLIGHT LIEUTENANT ALAN WASHBROOK, 36-year old navigator in a Valiant jet, pressed a button 8 miles above the Central Pacific yesterday and turned Britain into an H-bomb power

The bomb curved out of the aircraft and exploded 3 miles above the sea about 400 miles from Christmas Island, the test headquarters. It was Britain's first hydrogen-bang - and the answer to a year-long controversy.
