I was in the RAF, 3 years, six weeks recruit training, 13 weeks Compton Bassett as junior technician on ground wireless technician course and then under the Air Ministry to communicate (among others) with Christmas Island!!! and I was promoted to corporal. Half a year with Bletchley / Leighton Buzzard to communicate with guess what?, Christmas Island!!! then off to Christmas Island arriving in time for Grapple X with the first Comet...the Fanning trip occupied the Grapple Y time. The Gilbertese up the trees sighted the flash....
